FEATURES - ZAHRAH SHEIKH + CARPETFACE
ZAHRAH SHEIKH is a British Pakistani poet from Ilford. Zahrah is a member of Octavia (a women of colour collective lead by Rachel Long) based at Southbank and an alumnus of the Barbican Young Poets and Apples + Snakes Writing Room programmes. Her writing mainly explores prayer, the self, the weight of an action and silence. Zahrah has featured at the National Poetry Library, and was a part of the poetry album Let Me Out My Room Please produced by Bump Kin.
CARPETFACE real name AJ Russell, born Wembley, UK, started as a drummer in various bands since age 14, his first real studio job was remixing Lee Scratch Perry for Mad Professor’s Ariwa Label at just 22. Since first appearing on MTV and taking the underground London scene by storm in 2002, CARPETFACE, the emcee, social activist, multi-instrumentalist, and UK Hip Hop artist has released records steadily to critical acclaim.
After a decade away from the UK scene performing mainly in France, CARPETFACE returned with a vengeance in 2016 with his "12345-WAKEUP!" fundraiser single and tour in aid of Calais refugees, followed by 2017's award-winning "Don't Get It Twisted" solo single and widely acclaimed "Cognitive Diss" album. Since then he has not looked back, now about to take it all sideways between the solo Hip Hop with an eclectic stream of collab releases in the pipeline with the likes of Reggae and Dancehall veterans Jimi Lyons (Vibes and Pressure) and Poizon (MC Solution Soundsystem) along with professional songwriting and production projects (both live onstage and studio recordings) for a host of breakthrough artists.
