Fresh off the release of their debut album, Choplife Vol. 1: Mzansi Chronicles, African music superstar Mr Eazi’s new music group ChopLife SoundSystem has just announced details of its inaugural world tour this summer.
The Choplife World Series 2023 tour kicks off July 7 in Barcelona, Spain, with additional Europe dates in Amsterdam, London, Paris, Berlin and Stockholm across July and August. The North America leg begins August 25 in San Francisco, with stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Boston and New York City. Additional dates, including those in Africa, are forthcoming.
Consisting of Mr Eazi and British-Kenyan selector DJ Edu (of BBC 1Xtra fame), ChopLife SoundSystem is both a studio project and a touring rave, putting a unique African spin on the mobile sound systems that are the backbone of Jamaican dancehall culture.
Mr Eazi is the MC, or Minister of Enjoyment, for ChopLife SoundSystem, serving as the ringleader of the collective’s freeform parties. He’s joined by DJ Edu, who anchors ChopLife’s high-energy performances with a mix of amapiano, afrobeats and Afrodance sounds, along with guest artists and DJs.
“It’s all about awesome vibes, sounds from all over Africa, and surprise guests popping up,” Mr Eazi says of the ChopLife SoundSystem live experience “It’s about having well-curated parties in awesome venues with awesome production. And seeing me in a different light, as both a performer and MC.”
“This is the part of music I presently love the most — curating experiences,” Mr Eazi says of his MC role. “That’s the entire idea behind ChopLife SoundSystem: I can collaborate with as many different artists and producers, executive produce and present it to the world.”
This summer’s tour — Mr Eazi’s first in four years — follows the May 26 release of ChopLife SoundSystem’s debut album, Chop Life, Vol. 1: Mzansi Chronicles. (Listen HERE.) Recorded between Cape Town and Johannesburg, the 14-track album is an immersive dive into the heart of amapiano, the South African dance music genre that’s exploded onto the world stage recently. The project includes guest features from a mix of South African music stars and emerging talent, including Focalistic, Anaati, Ami Faku, Moonchild Sanelly, Major League Djz, Mellow & Sleazy, Nkosazana Daughter, 2woshort, Stompiiey, Mo-T and Aymos.
