Description

A prodigy from the age of 12, the legend of Garnett Silk began auspiciously as a DJ before his star quality was noticed by Derrick Morgan, who mentored and guided him into a singing career which saw him work with the likes of King Tubby, Prince Jammy, and Sly & Robbie.

Countless number one singles and albums followed, as Silk became Jamaica’s biggest star in the early 90s. His life was tragically cut short in 1994 aged only 28, but his timeless body of work has been kept alive by one of his children, Garnet Jah Lij Smith.

Garnet’s own steps into music are a story in itself. At age 13, after being encouraged for years to sing by his family and friends, Garnet finally made his first attempt at recording his voice on tape. Pecus family friend and producer recorded his first track entitled “Jah A Guide”.

Committed to delivering messages of hope on his musical journey, Garnet Jah Lij Smith’s special show at the Jazz Cafe will be a continuation of his great father’s legacy, without following directly in his footsteps.
