The landscape of soul, jazz and just about every dinner party playlist would be a lot less colourful without the man Erykah Badu dubbed the “Godfather of Neo Soul”.
A singer, multi-instrumentalist, and film scorer, Roy Ayers spearheaded the hip hop and funk fusion that became acid jazz. From Everybody Loves Sunshine to Don’t Stop The Feeling to Third Eye, his floating vocals were swept with funky basslines, lush chords and waves of vibraphone that are still having their effect. With Tyler, The Creator frequently citing Ayers as his biggest inspiration, this is no doubt a show for anyone who loves timeless music.
Approaching the melodies and keyboard with as much finesse and groove as always, a gig with Roy Ayers is a mellow singalong waiting to happen.
