Description

A global institution recognised for celebrating unity, creativity and heritage in the music world, AFROPUNK is a triumph of multiculturalism and diversity for people of all races, genders, creeds and more. An international sensation that is returning to London will culminate on September 8th, with a live performance from August Greene consisting of Robert Glasper, Common, Karriem Riggins and Special guests Laura Mvula, Akala, Bakar, Recess and Shabba and more to be announced!

A nod to all that Afropunk stands for, the trio have become synonymous with politically charged, emotive sounds through this collaboration. Robert Glasper the incredible singer & songwriter behind the works of Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, J Dilla, and Mos Def to name a few. Chicago’s Hip-Hop Legend and actor Common, an award-winning MC still sounding as fresh as day dot, from his track 'I Used to Love H.E.R.' to his Grammy award-winning soundtrack for the Civil Rights Movement film, Selma. Finally rounding off the trio is Detroit’s renowned beatmaker and producer Karriem Riggins who pivots between wistful soul and gritty drum breaks, giving ample room for his featured artists to shine, such as Kaytranada’s '99.9%', Esperanza Spalding’s shape-shifting Emily’s D+Evolution, Kanye West's Life Of Pablo among many other albums.

Soulful songstress and activist, Laura Mvula brings her multi-award winning beautiful, music to the Academy, too with a super-special guest performance alongside August Greene, eyes peeled for more guests still to come. Truly embodying the Afropunk spirit, poet, scholar and activist, Akala will also join. Having recently received an honorary Doctorate for his studies on race and class in Natives, the North London rapper and cultural commentator is a no-brainer for Afropunk. Don’t miss Bakar, the Rockstar on the rise fusing native grime inspired sounds with a punkish DIY attitude. From the esteemed Colours Berlin, to performances at locally loved Bone Soda parties, it’s musical anarchy at its finest. Last but not least, party purveyors, Recess, join again for their second Afropunk Brixton outing.

Expand your mind and feast your ears, for the inimitable hip-hop and contemporary r&b performance, as these artists combine their talents to display an electrifying Hip-Hop and R&B performance Live at Afropunk.

Afropunk has appeared across the globe in New York, Atlanta, Johannesburg and Paris is now entering its third year and has evolved with a community focus. Descending on South London’s eclectic hub, steeped in rich history and effervescent with diversity in cultures it will be taking place in Brixton. Musically, it’s a melting pot of vintage sounds and new-gen energy, with a programme spanning classic hip-hop, rap, soul, jazz, afrobeats and beyond. Alongside this, there will be exhibitions talks and various other events throughout the week building the Afropunk community.

This special 4 pm – 1 am event will see some very special guests join the bill. Details to be announced.
