Description

A nearly homeless janitor without formal education gets a record deal, becomes a multi-platinum selling pop star, plays stadiums across Africa, then builds a career as a popular politician for the African National Congress party. The story of Awesome Tapes From Africa affiliate, Penny Penny, is stuff of legend.

Penny Penny’ fusion of house beats and electronic steel drums with call-and-response vocals brings a breath of fresh air to Tsonga disco. His 1994 debut Shaka Bundu propelled the South African performer into stardom and since, he has climbed from strength to strength at the forefront of various African disco scenes.

Playing a central role in the development of African party music, Penny Penny is nothing short of a pioneer in the realms of funk and disco.
