Blending the sounds of West African drumming with Portuguese fados, Brazilian modhinas and British sea shanties the Cape Verde songstress's music stands tall amongst all generations.
Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she started singing around bars in her birthplace of Mindelo before releasing her first commercial record, "La Diva Aux Pieds Nus," in 1988. Shipping her records around the world, she gradually came to international prominence in the 1990s, with her majestic and grounded voice becoming a staple sound for West Africa.
With hits such as 'Sodade' and 'Petite Pays', it was only a matter of time till her project 'Voz d'Amor' received a Grammy Award in 2004 for Best Contemporary World Music Album.
